strawberries 2020

It’s time for our annual berry post! Ever since we moved here and discovered that strawberries LOVE North Carolina, we have made sure to glut ourselves every March and April. I’m one of those weird people that will only eat watermelons in the summer and strawberries are only eaten in our house, fresh-picked, in the early spring. It’s a rule. I also have to make jam. It’s a rule. The only thing that changes with this tradition is how old my kids are…

Neil isn’t as enamored of strawberry picking as I am. Our church used to own huge strawberry fields close to where he grew up and as a kid he would be volunteered to pick berries. Nothing kills the romance of an experience like being forced to do it as a kid. I, on the other hand, was raised in the dessert where the only things that grew would bite you if you touched them. Naturally I’m still totally in love with green growing things and snow. Nothing creates an infatuation like being denied it as a kid.
