Naomi's new hair

Naomi's new hair

There are a great many worthy and noble hills to die on as a parent. I’ve never really felt that crazy hair was one of them. Probably because I’ve been dying my hair randomly for a while now. I’ve done purple streaks. I did maroon right before Neil and I got married. Currently it’s bleached blond but only from the middle down (side note: since going carnivore my hair and nails grow super fast and are really awesome. Viva la keratin and collagen.) So when my sweet 10.98 year old asked if she could dye her hair orange, I said of course.

She insisted that her aunt Brenna make it happen. Since Naomi’s hair is so dark, I drew on my own bleaching adventure and decided the easiest way to get orange would be to just bleach it. A few days before dying it, I trimmed it and cut layers into her hair. The internet and practice are turning me into a passable cutter of girl hair. Then we got a cheap kit, drove up to my mom’s and away we went.

It didn’t take long since we weren’t doing the whole thing, just the tips for a little something extra for our Harry Potter trip (side note: We leave tomorrow and it’s embarrassing how excited I am. There might be several blog posts next week just to contain all of my enthusiastic picture taking…I apologize in advance).

The Great British Bake Off and graham crackers helped us pass the time while the dye worked its magic.

The little girls didn’t want to miss out on Brenna hair fun, so they both got trims. I normally am fine with Layna keeping her hair a bit shorter, but I am making her wait until after our trip to go short again. Turns out pony tails make exceptional mask holder uppers. Layna’s ears aren’t built to handle glasses and a cute Hufflepuff house mask. Sigh.

I know Naomi was expecting something a bit more dramatic, but she was really happy with how it turned out. I love it. Perfect for a first attempt. Plus there is also the option of dying it again after our trip to get a bit more contrast…but overall this soon to be 11 year old is feeling grown up and stylin’.
