Copenhagen

Finally. It’s time for me to dive into our most epic adventure to date! Yay!
We flew into Copenhagen via Iceland (side note: the Iceland Air propaganda on the flight was super effective and I definitely want to stop there for a few days if we ever get the chance.) and spent two days there. Then before we flew home we had another two days in the capital. So today I’m going to tell you a bit about our time in this super cool city.
All the nights in Copenhagen we stayed at a hotel/hostel called Urban House. They had a fabulous breakfast spread every morning and its location was a quick walk away from the main Metro/train station. Also Foosball and an old timey fighting arcade game that Layna loved. The only thing that was unfortunate about our accommodations was that it’s unusual to have air conditioning in a country that only really needs it a few weeks out of the year. Well, our stay was during one of those periods. It was just barely too warm to leave the windows closed and too loud outside to leave the windows open. We survived somehow.
During our first stint we went to church and visited the Temple. It felt just like home, albeit in Danish. Then later that day we went to Rosenborg Castle, on Corra’s insistence. It was the coolest “little” castle! Fun thing about European castles is they usually combine eccentricity with lots of expendable cash. Hence things like a room covered in mirrors. Or massive silver lions and insane hand carved ivory…just because.

Metro. Trains. Billund and all things Lego. Back to Copenhagen.
My family humored me and we went to Nyhavn…one of the most iconic places in Europe. It was as crowded and loud and as European as you’d expect. We ate hot dogs next to old fashioned wooden ships and waved at one of Hans Christian Andersen’s houses. Ducking down an ally to take a break from the noise and people we wandered a ways and discovered Amalienborg Palace, the official home of the Danish King. It was grand and quiet and had a lovely modern garden.

The last day in Copenhagen we went to Tivoli Gardens, the second oldest amusement park in the world. Since we were tired and almost amusement parked out…each kid got to choose one ride to go on solo (well…Layna always gets a buddy and Neil was allowed to stand with Corra on her ride). Layna chose a small roller coaster, Garyn a huge swing thing, Namoi the most intense coaster in the park and Corra a merry-go-round. All in all, a very accurate representation of how they feel about rides.
