valentines...

2025-02-15

It’s been quiet around these parts lately. I am not sure what to do or how to feel when a Saturday rolls around and I’m not sure what I want to share and [gasp!] no pictures of anything interesting. Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and it was super chill. For one, my valentine won’t be back in the country for a few hours. He went to Berlin for the first time and really loved it. The snow was pretty great. So luckily next week my blog post material has been decided for me. Today’s post in kind of low key.
I grew out of hating Valentine’s Day a long time ago. I think everyone goes through some sort of progression:

  • when you are a kid Valentine’s Day is awesome. Themed parties at school and obligatory cards and treats from your classmates.
  • for early teens, Valentine’s Day is a mixed bag. It’s either fun if your family does something fun for it or your friends make it special. Or it’s just meh.
  • Highschool is more of the same but you are finding your voice and may choose to actively boycott and express how stupid the holiday is. Unless you have a BF/GF in which case it’s a great holiday.
  • early 20’s married or single means you have to hate the holiday and cynically deride and mock it and those who slavishly buy into the hype. But oddly enough you still expect/want some sort of acknowledge from loves, friends, and family.
  • then you hit the last stage which lasts the rest of forever…Valentine’s Day becomes sweet, silly, and harmless. You genuinely can take it or leave it but bear it no ill will. Live and let live and if you want to jump on the excuse for more chocolate and cheap flowers? We salute you.

I’m in the last stage. Monday we all took Corra to her silks class and we splurged on chocolates from a local candy shop around the corner from the studio. Yesterday my girls got the traditional cheap chocolate filled heart and a new stuffy. My husband had a cheesy card stuffed into his suitcase and he left me one on his night stand. Garyn had a lovely night on the town with the girl he is dating. She is a killer artist and made him custom stickers. Layna made us a valentine at school and Corra’s BFF/boy she LikeLikes and he LikeLikes her exchanged presents. His big sister is friends with Naomi and because none of them had school they came over for lunch and a playdate. It was delightfully sweet and super low key.

P.s. the cat was wondering if the Bearded Dragon wanted to be friends. He respectfully declined.
