I adore our house. We magically found it on the internet and the first time I set foot inside was when we pulled up late in the evening with our kids in jammies and all that we owned in the truck. First priority was releasing the pent up energy and letting said kids run amok in their new habitat while we dug out mattresses. That first night I was so worried that because the ceilings in the front room were lower than I was used to (8’ tall instead of 12’) we had made some horrible mistake. Luckily it was not, in fact, a horrible mistake. Rather it was exactly the most perfect thing we could have done. I’ve continued to fall more in love with our little house as the years have gone on and we improve things here and there. On the list was our poor termite ridden porch railings and posts on the porch and the stairs to the side door. Garyn helped with the project a bit before he left and Neil finished up. Well, not finished yet. He still needs to put up the railings on the porch. However, I’m in my annual “Blog Dry Spell” and need to fill space before The Holidays fill every available week. Post about posts it is!
Naturally, I forgot to get a before picture of the side door, but basically the wood posts were not cut to the right height and the railing didn’t attach very well. Garyn helped with demo and it was the project to get a feel for how the PVC post system worked. Neil also found solar light caps that are so lovely when the sun goes down. So the side door happened in May and the porch steps and posts happened in late August. I couldn’t be happier with the results and no longer feel guilt about not repainting the railings. The PVC will just need to be washed occasionally and the railings will look exactly like the wood ones the house has always had. We talked about changing the look of the house by going with a different style of post and railing but I truly love the cottage vibe and want to keep that look forever. We will just maintian as necessary to keep it going strong for another 30 years.
