We’ve known for a long time (since all the kids did a whopping round of strep throat years ago) that our youngest darling has ginormous, gargantuan tonsils. Well…had. She had humongous tonsils. They have since parted ways. But a few months ago we realized that if Corra had any congestion she’d have to sleep with her mouth open. But if she slept with her mouth open she’d have episodes just like if she had sleep apnea. That was a bit concerning. So we went to an ENT and he took one look and said, “Yup, those are some big tonsils alright. On a scale of 0-4, zero being absent and 4 touching the dangling thing…yours are a generous 3.” He then recommended we have them removed, that it would absolutely improve her sleep, and her quality of life would be generally better. Then we were introduced to his secretary and booked for the first available day after she got out of school. June 1st she had her very first surgery.
It was perfectly boring and routine. She was very nervous going in, but in good spirits. 20 minutes after I got back to the waiting room the surgeon called to tell me it was over and she did great. 10 minutes later I was called back to be with her. Coming out of the anesthesia was rough…she had had a nightmare and was crying when I got to her. Soon she was able to calm down and after about 45 minutes of lying still and eating popsicles we were cleared to go home. The freezer was stuffed with all the popsicles and it took about 4-5 days for her to be utterly sick of them and all soft foods. She didn’t talk for about a week and mostly communicated by typing stuff on my phone or writing it down. I’d say she was completely normal at about a week and a half, which was much faster than the two weeks we were told. All in all she survived and is doing great.
